Listed below are the 3 leading and most common illness in your pet’s health that you should watch for.
1. Parasite infection. One of the main problems that dog owners face is battling internal and external parasites that plague their pet. Hookworms are common parasite of dogs. Most common is Ancylostoma caninum, followed by Uncinaria stenocephala and A. braziliense. Signs include diarrhea, vomiting, and weight loss. Good hygiene and proper preventative measures are the keys to keeping your dog “parasite-free”. Many species of parasites can infect dogs that come in contact with contaminated feces. So it is important to keep a close eye on any waste your dog produces, and remove it from the yard at least once a week. If you suspect that your dog may have contracted a parasitic infection, consult your veterinarian immediately. Following a regular de-worming routine and keeping your pet isolated from areas frequented by stray animals will certainly help.
2. Skin disease. Most skin diseases are sometimes caused by the presence of external parasite. Fortunately, these bacteria are not contagious to humans or other pets. Commonly itchy, yellow pustules are often observed early in the disease, and the dog’s skin can be reddened and ulcerated. Dry, crusted areas appear as the condition advances, along with loss of hair in the affected areas (lesions) and an odor. Generally, skin diseases are being treated with antiseptics and antibiotic treatments. At home, although skin diseases are not contagious to human, meaning, their ability to cause infection to man is not possible at all. Your dog needs to be isolated while on the treatment process to give time for healing and advancement.
3. Rabies. Rabies transferred from the saliva of the infected animal or by receiving a bite from the infected animal, is the most feared of the canine diseases as there is no treatment available and death is certain. Prevention is the only way to stop this illness. Make sure your pet is vaccinated against Rabies and keep your distance from un-vaccinated dogs and wild animals.
